‘Squaring the Circle’ is the first in Troika’s series of perspective sculptures, which includes ‘Dark Matter’ (2014), ‘Polar Spectrum’ (2015) and ‘Everything is and isn't at the same time’(2015). Inspired by Edwin Abbott’s satirical novel ‘Flatland’ where the inhabitants of a two-dimensional world cannot recognise a three-dimensional object, these works are a mutation of different forms which are perceived in correlation to the position of the observer. “Squaring the Circle” by Troika, displayed at Kohn Gallery, is an optical illusion-based artwork that challenges the viewer’s perception of geometric shapes and mathematical impossibilities. The piece plays on the ancient problem of attempting to “square the circle,” which involves creating a square with the same area as a given circle using only a finite number of steps. Troika reinterprets this challenge through a mesmerizing visual experience, where circular and square forms interact in a dyn
